Note that the orange boundary line includes several pieces of land that belong to neighbouring houses, rather than to the Council. We have shaded these areas light blue. According to the new plan, it has been designed for the future efficient development of land within the Southern Area if it becomes available, but is currently outside the Council's land ownership. It's worth pointing out that most of the Southern Area has always been open land. For example, here is part of a 1911 map of Totnes. You can see that none of the land comprising the Southern Area was built on then. You might also notice that Moorashes were originally called Morass Cottages, presumably because that area was even more swamp-like then than it is now. Of course the new plan puts houses right in the middle of this area! Click on either of the two miniviews here to see aerial photos of the southern area taken 30 or 40 years ago (many thanks to Brenda Benham for permission to use these).

The 2002 Draft Plan (which was much better than the current plan in our opinion), can be seen here.
